The New York Times Takes a Shine to Dallas Architecture

The New York Times has more Dallas subscribers than the Dallas Morning News. Maybe that’s why the Gray Lady keeps eyeing us. Last week, a California writer for The Times tried to figure out why everyone is moving here. Today a Berlin-based author who grew up here published an article in the Times entitled “Discovering a Secret Wonderland of Architecture in Dallas”. Rob Madole, a former ARCH + editor, pokes fun at Pioneer Plaza (“… one of the largest parks in the city that had 39 bronze cattle sculptures, but not a single bench”) before doing some nice things about Cityplace Tower, Plaza of the Americas, says, and the Las Colinas Canal. Here is his last paragraph:

“When I moved to Berlin, I fell for the drama of its rich architectural past, the feeling that the closer you look, the more there is to be discovered. I thought this was an experience a city like Dallas couldn’t offer, but it turned out that I just didn’t know where to look. “

Oh, that’s sweet to say of him. But before we all get too red, maybe check out this groundbreaking David Dillon D Magazine cover story entitled “Why Is Dallas Architecture So Bad?”
