The Spread: Will Dallas Flock To A Drake-Owned Chicken Spot?
Drake is investing in a hot chicken spot with a growing footprint in North Texas, a Rowlett restaurant bans masks, break-ins are happening across town, and much more.
Welcome to The Spread, our weekly feature aiming to share all of the printable news from the restaurant, food and beverage industry. Except this is the internet, so space is not an issue. Also: Good thing because this is Dallas and this city always has the latest restaurant news coming down like whoa.
This week’s restaurant news is popping like champagne – or shall we say champagne papi?
That’s because rappers drake invested in the Hot Chicken chain in Nashville Dave’s hot chicken. The LA-based chicken joint has 22 locations – including one in the far north of Dallas and another slated to open in Plano, according to the Dallas Morning News. While details about the Certified Lover Boy’s involvement have not been disclosed, he joins the ranks of several notable investors, including Boston Red Sox Chairperson Tom Werner and Samuel L. Jackson. Does that mean we’ll see a lot more Drake in North Texas? That could be cool – although, to be honest, we can probably do without a “10 o’clock in Plano” freestyle.
Speaking of Plano: The shops in Willow Bend will be hosting soon friends– Themed pop-up bar inspired by the show’s fictional café, Central advantage. Oddly enough, various performances of Central Perk have already popped up in Dallas, in places like Klyde Warren Park and the AT&T Experience Store, none of them actually served coffee. According to Eater Dallas, this place will be packed with coffee, as well as donuts and other baked goods. There will also be replicas of iconic moments on the show that make cute Instagram photo ops possible.
Over in Rowlett, on the other hand, there was less comedy this week, but certainly a situation: a couple was told to leave Hang up timeline for wearing masks. Yes you’ve read correctly! For wearing masks! According to Dallas Morning News, owner of Hang Time Tom Blackmer sent a waitress to the parents and asked them to take off their masks, adding that Blackmer’s reasoning for the move was actually “very political”. Blackmer added that there are several bars in the area and those who are not comfortable with the policy should “go elsewhere”. You know what tom We will!
Let’s stay on the subject of incel-like behavior: The Dallas Observer reported this week that a group of Texans attacked a hostess in a New York restaurant Carmine if you are asked to provide proof of vaccination. Fortunately, these came from Houston and not from our forest. Still, in the immortal words of The chicks, we’re ashamed these people are from Texas.
Oh, and as if that jolt wasn’t enough, there were the surprise break-ins in bars and restaurants across town last week. At least three area spots – including Three links and St. Pete’s Dancing Marlin in Deep Ellum and Sandwich Hag over in the cedar trees – were hit within two days, and although no one appeared to have stolen anything of real value, everyone suffered broken glass and property destruction.
And yet more and more companies want to take part in this campaign!
For starters on that front, the Dallas Morning News has the Bear about a new bird-themed restaurant in Uptown in the room that was previously run by Two bosses. Called Firebird fowl, the new spot offers a variety of poultry products, including emu fajitas, orange-pepper-duck tacos and even ostrich queso. Are you and your herd interested in this?
Back in Deep Ellum, the room that was before Hide has reopened as RoPo & Logan. Heard Abby Perkins, Wife of Hide managing partner Nick Backlund, According to CultureMap, RoPo & Logan aims to create a Midwestern dive bar atmosphere inspired by Perkins’ time in Chicago. The menu features several hearty items like a cheese-filled burger and adult drinks, including a frozen one Malort Cocktail called Green River Slush.
Over in East Dallas meanwhile Baldo’s ice cream opens a shop at Casa Linda Plaza. According to CultureMap, the new spot will be the second of the prestigious dessert destination in University Park, and it’s in the former Steel City Pops when it opens its doors this weekend.
Hey, what a sweet note at the end!
