McDonald’s began closing its locations in America’s largest retail chain about 10 years ago, which subsequently left about 700 empty retail spaces in Walmart stores.
Now other fast food chains are moving in-including Wendys. America’s second largest burger chain recently opened its first Hamburg stand in a Walmart store. Next up is another fast food chain that hungry Texas shoppers already know and love.

Shawarma is a dish in which meat such as beef, chicken, lamb or turkey is thinly sliced and stacked on a cone. After roasting, the meat is cut off for use in bowls, platters, salads, wraps and other meals.
Shawarma Press is known for its “Fusion” menu items such as the Tandoori Press and Tex-Mex Shawarmas. The Texas-born brand has had one location in Irving for about five years and is adding seven locations in Walmart stores in the neighborhood. According to Community Impact Newspaper, a filing indicates that work on the restaurant, which is slated to open in the Walmart Supercenter in Plano, “should be completed by early November”.
“We were the first to introduce kebab at the Dallas-Fort-Worth Metroplex,” said Sawsan Abublan, the company’s founder and CEO, in a press release that read Eat This, Not That! “Some people don’t know it, so we explain that ‘kebab’ is the wrap and ‘press’ refers to the grill or griddle that crisps the wrap. Customers appreciate that kebab and the rest of our dishes are made from scratch, including Mediterranean staples like our famous hummus, falafel and sauces. “
“We are excited about this opportunity to introduce our fast-casual Mediterranean food concept to everyone,” added Abublan. “With the introduction of 10 new franchises in Walmart and other locations, the time is perfect for us to delight our customers with the many delicious flavors and health benefits of Mediterranean cuisine.”
For Shawarma Press, further steps are indeed in sight. As the growing chain adds more locations in Texas over the next year, it will expand into Florida and Oklahoma as well.
Arlington, Georgetown, Plano and San Antonio restaurants are currently being added, with additional locations in Irving, Frisco and Mansfield due to open next year. Some of these restaurants are located in Walmart stores.

Over the course of 2021, fast food restaurants like Dominos, La Madeleine French Bakery & Cafe, Nathan’s Famous, Saladworks, Taco Bell, and Wow Bao added locations in Walmart stores to their footprints.
Wendy’s is the newest brand name to join the club with one of its new hamburger stalls recently opened in a Walmart in Heath, Ohio. Another place is coming to Buckeye State later this year, but now if you want the exclusive Jalapeño Popper Chicken Nuggets or Strawberry Frosty, you have to make the trip to Heath.

As the holiday season approaches, Walmart is making some changes. While the lack of items like beef, pork, juice, and more, Walmart has some items well before Black Friday, expanding the number of stores where shoppers can buy alcohol online.
