Tiaras and treasures from Cartier Paris to dazzle Dallas Museum of Art
A sparkling new exhibit will make its North American debut in Dallas next spring: “Cartier and Islamic Art: In Search of Modernity” will be on view at the Dallas Museum of Art from May 14 to September 18, 2022, after being presented at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris this fall.
The large exhibition examines inspirations from Islamic art and design, “including from Louis J. Cartier’s (1875-1942) exquisite collection of Persian and Indian art and the works of the designers of the Maison Cartier from the early 20th century to the present day,” it says in one Release.
The exhibition with 400 objects is jointly organized by the Dallas Museum of Art and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, in collaboration with Cartier and the Musée du Louvre.
“For over a century, Cartier and its designers have recognized and celebrated the inherent beauty and symbolic values of Islamic art and architecture and woven similar elements into their own designs,” said Agustín Arteaga, Eugene McDermott Director of the DMA, in the press release. “This bridge between Eastern and Western art forms speaks precisely to the types of cross-cultural connections that the DMA seeks to highlight through our programs and grants.”
The exhibition shows Cartier jewelry and luxury items (such as tiaras) alongside historical photographs, construction drawings, archival materials and works of art.
It examines how Cartier’s designers adapted forms and techniques from Islamic art, architecture and jewelry as well as materials from India, Iran and the Arab countries and “synthesized them into a recognizable, modern style language that is unique to the House of Cartier.” says the museum.
The renowned studio Diller Scofidio + Renfro (DS + R) creates a contemporary display that offers improved possibilities for a close look and analysis of the form throughout the exhibition.
“It was an extraordinary experience to work with Cartier’s very astute team and amazing collections and archives, as well as with our colleagues at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs and the Louvre, to discover a story of modern design based on the active involvement of Cartier designers excellent, complex works of art and architecture from Islamic countries, ”says co-organizer Heather Ecker in the press release. “Cartier’s jewels and jeweled objects have a distinctive style and sense of taste that has been cultivated in part through this aesthetic appreciation and study of Islamic art.”
