TWU Little Chapel-in-the-Woods receives landmark architecture award
Alex Thomas, Architect and Director of Planning and Design at TWU, accepts the Architectural Landmark Award from the Texas Society of Architects.
October 29, 2021 – DENTON – The Little Chapel-in-the-Woods has secured its place in history and was recently recognized by the Texas Society of Architects during the organization’s 82nd Annual Conference and Design Expo in San Antonio, October 7-9 . The group honored the chapel with the Architectural Landmark Award.
The award, recognized earlier this year by the Dallas AIA, recognizes the chapel for its “status as an architecturally significant building that continues to inspire architects and architecture and is a landmark in the industry”.
In front of more than 1,000 architects and designers, Alex Thomas, architect and head of planning and design at TWU, accepted the award on behalf of the university.
“All buildings have a purpose and meaning, and some like the Little Chapel stand the test of time,” said Thomas. “This award not only recognizes the TWU community of faculty and students who initially helped build the chapel, but also recognizes the fact that the TWU community has been a good steward of this very special Texas landmark for more than 80 years is. ”
Built in 1939 and designed by the renowned Texan architect O’Neil Ford as a place of reflection for students, the Little Chapel is considered the ultimate realization of Ford’s vision of contemporary architecture, but also of a specific location or culture. It is considered a masterpiece of architectural regionalism.
At just 90 feet long and 42 feet wide, Little Chapel-in-the-Woods at Texas Woman’s University is small but mighty – and adorable. Despite its place in architectural history, the chapel is also a popular spot for TWU students looking for a quiet space for self-reflection, as well as for couples looking for an intimate place to exchange their vows.
