Vaccine bonuses and back to school photo ops smarten this Dallas news

It’s time on the budget with this roundup of the city news of Dallas, with town halls to attend. An environmental group combed the budget and found things they didn’t like. DISD gives vaccination bonuses. And someone in the city’s IT department made a big boo-boo.

Here’s what happened in Dallas this week:

Don’t press delete

A large chunk of data was accidentally deleted from the Dallas police network.

According to DPD, a single unidentified IT employee performed a migration but did not follow the correct procedures and deleted 22 terabytes of data.

Of these, 14 have been restored, but the other eight have disappeared for good. (One terabyte contains 250,000 photos and 6 million documents.)

According to the public prosecutor’s office, the public prosecutor’s office could be affected. The city became aware of the problem on April 5, but it is only now coming to light.

City budget

On August 8, the Dallas City Manager released a draft annual budget to the public. It is published online for your reading pleasure.

Budget town halls, held in each district, began on August 12th and will last through August 26th. They also published the schedule online. You still have 30 opportunities to attend one and hear budget discussions and questions.

City budget through an environmental filter

The Texas Campaign for the Environment looked through the newly released city budget and found some issues of concern:

  • Environmental budget cut: The Office of Environmental Quality and Sustainability (OEQS), charged with implementing the city’s environmental and climate initiatives, cut $ 400,000. This cut represents 10 percent of the environmental department’s total budget. “We think the city should expand environmental programs, for both winter and summer,” the campaign said.

  • Short-lived residents and plumbing workers: The budget increases household hygiene fees by $ 3.78 per month. The reason: service delays, IE delayed garbage and recycling pick-ups. The campaign indicates that the city still plans to rely on contract labor, which does not guarantee workers basic benefits such as adequate health care or lunch breaks. They also note that the city doesn’t seem to be raising the price for commercial customers to dump trash at McComas Bluff Landfill, one of the cheapest landfills in the country.

  • Public and Police Security at Risk: The budget almost doubles the current overtime budget of $ 17.3 million. “There is much debate about how best to manage and budget the city’s police resources, but we know this for sure: studies suggest that longer shifts are harmful to the health of officers and make them more prone to fatal errors,” said it in the campaign. “The Texas legislature passed a law preventing cities from slashing police budgets must be much smarter in budget decisions for the police, especially if they have been shown to increase the risk to the public and uniformed officers.”

They encourage you to contact your city council member who can be found on this handy online map.

Vaccination bonus

The Dallas Independent School District will pay teachers and staff an additional $ 500 if they receive the COVID-19 vaccine.

“With an eye to the safety and well-being of staff and students, Dallas ISD is offering a one-time incentive of $ 500 for district employees who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19,” the district said in a statement.

The bonus is available to every employee who fills out an online form and presents proof of vaccination by November 15th.

Back to school photo op

The Shops at Park Lane, at Park Lane and US-75 have installed school-themed pop-ups for back-to-school selfies.

This includes an oversized notebook that is 1.5 meters high, as well as a number of pencils and oversized crayons that are 1.2 meters high. The notebook is interactive, with movable pages. There are also oversized sunglasses.

The installation will be in the mall by the end of September and is located on the lawn between Starbucks and Chipotle.

The giant sunglasses will be on site by the end of August and are located near the Whole Foods parking garage across from Bowl and Barrel.
