Walmart opening 2 new facilities in Lancaster

Automation, the retailer said, will help Walmart keep pace with customer demands as the retailer continues to grow nationwide.

DALLAS COUNTY, Texas – The construction of two new high-tech supply chain facilities for retail giant Walmart is underway.

The chain selected the Dallas-Fort Worth area to build the two new facilities, which include a 1,500,000 square foot fulfillment center and 730,000 square foot grocery distribution center. Both facilities will be automated, said a Walmart spokesman.

Construction workers have been busy getting both Lancaster sites up and running for the next two years, with the fulfillment center due to open in 2023 and the grocery center due to open in 2024.

Automation, the retailer said, will help Walmart keep pace with customer demands as Wally World continues to grow nationwide.

With the two new centers, the retailer plans to not only get the products onto the shelves faster, but also to meet customer demands at home. The automated facilities will allow Walmart to more than double the products it brings to stores and for customer home delivery.

Lauren Willis is part of Walmart’s global communications team. She said the opening of the Lancaster facilities will also boost the economy in that part of North Texas. For example, the Lancaster area prepared for the facilities months ago with new paved roads, new sidewalks, a footpath and more being planned.

The Lancaster facilities will be the company’s largest automated sites, adding about a thousand new jobs. When the high-tech facility on Cornell Street and East Pleasant Run is ready, some of the jobs will be high-tech, the company said.

“We’re looking for people with technology experience,” Willis told the WFAA. “In fact, 40 percent of new jobs created will require STEM skills to support technical positions.”

Walmart operates 19 distribution centers, 593 retail stores, and employs more than 171,000 people in the state of Texas, according to the company.

“I am delighted to be working with Walmart, along with my colleagues on Lancaster City Council, as they build two facilities in our community at the same time,” said Clyde C. Hairston, Lancaster Mayor. “This is a true example of my philosophy that ‘positive, progressive partnerships create wealth for all’. Working together in a collaborative atmosphere always benefits the whole. “

Dallas County Commissioner John Wiley Price agreed, saying the facilities will “anchor” the Inland Port area of Dallas County.

“This investment is a boon to both Southern Dallas County and Northern Ellis Counties,” said Price. “Walmart continues to bring economic viability to the fastest growing industrial area in the country.”
