What the Abilene Reporter-News liked and disliked: Big moments

PLEASE

1. Big little league. Still has to start with Wylie Little League. After losing a 5-0 lead to Michigan in a 6-5 loss on Monday, the Texas team won two playoffs and made it into the final six teams on Thursday in Williamsport, Penn. Unfortunately Michigan was back in Texas number, scoring eight runs in the third inning en route to a 15-6 victory. But what a thrill it was to see the local crew on national broadcasts. Texas must be proud of our boys and that one special girl.

2. Oh yeah … soccer. Almost lost on the local baseball news is that Texas high school football season is on. Some games were played on Thursday with Wylie losing to Burleson on the street. Cooper at home and Abilene High out and about played Friday night. Our local college teams start next weekend with Abilene Christian against the SMU in Dallas. We hope it will be a great season for all local teams, especially the Texas Leadership Charter Academy start-up team, which is playing its second fall in six-a-side football. TLCA lost 56-6 to Woodson on Thursday.

3. School name celebration. Pride was evident on Thursday when the Abilene ISD officially recognized the names of the Alcorta, Purcell and Stafford elementary schools. These are the new names for Jackson, Johnston and Lee schools, respectively, named after Confederate-era officials. The schools are now named after educators who made a difference locally, representing black, Hispanic, and white leaders. The winners were delighted with the recognition and bowed for Abilene.

4th Campus is teeming. It’s always nice to see empty parking lots fill up again at our local colleges and community colleges. The students are back and that makes Abilene even more alive. We hope you have a fun but safe fall academic semester.

5. Cowboys versus jaguars. Preseason losses don’t mean much. At least that’s what fans say whose teams don’t win. But if Dallas can’t beat Jacksonville, a one-win team in 2020, the NFL season in Big D will start without much momentum. It will be fun to see the Jags’ two young quarterbacks, Trevor Lawrence and Gardner Minshew, in action. It’ll be more fun to watch Trevor Lawrence meet Dallas’ DeMarcus Lawrence five or six yards past the scrimmage line.

6th Ruff excursion at Five Point. The groundbreaking ceremony for Primal Pet Food took place this week and will offer additional job opportunities in Abilene. This is a $ 31 million expansion. Not Great Lakes Cheese, but significant. The company makes natural pet foods and there is a growing market for that. Just ask your pet.

DECLINED

1. Increase in COVID. The numbers have skyrocketed, back to triple digits, with cases and deaths in Taylor County rising to 430 as of March 2020. Some restrictive measures are being taken while elsewhere going on as usual. For example, no restrictions were placed on fans for Friday’s football game at Shotwell Stadium. There’s a wait and see attitude towards almost everything, but being sure is never a bad thing.

2. Also in the Abilene area. Those expecting the season opener football game with Colorado City and Albany were disappointed to hear that Colorado City ISD was closed through Wednesday due to COVID cases. Iran had to do the same thing, something we hoped wouldn’t be seen this fall.

3. Misfortune in Kabul. It is difficult to watch the collapse of Afghanistan, compounded by a suicide attack on Thursday that killed 13 US soldiers and 60 Afghans at the airport in Kabul. So many lives lost in this country and not much solved.

4th Heat remains. Tuesday is September 1st and there is hope that autumn will soon be in the air. Not winter; We had enough of that in February. However, the air will still be warm with little chance of rain. It’s ironic that we anticipate football, but much of the season is played in summery conditions.

HMMM

Donald Trump, who would become President of the United States 40 years later, welcomed Herschel Walker to the New Jersey Generals in 1984. The Georgia Heisman Trophy winner has announced that he is running for the Senate as a Republican.

1. Try to address this. Would you like to face Herschel Walker? The former Georgia star, who played for the Dallas Cowboys for several seasons and stormed 1,500 yards in 1988, is running for Republican Senator in Georgia. Walker’s professional career began in 1984 when he signed with the USFL’s New Jersey Generals, owned by Donald Trump. When the league collapsed, Trump quipped (though not on Twitter) that spring football was a loser. Walker and Trump are considered allies almost 40 years later.
