Whataburger has an art museum now

The Whataburger Museum of Art is an Instagram page of artwork created by fans of the quintessential Texan brand.

DALLAS – Kristin Moore lived in Texas for most of her life, with the exception of two years at the Graduate School in Los Angeles.

The long drive between California and home unleashed a love of the western sky, brilliant sunsets and Texas capitals.

“I think my love for Whataburger really grew when I lived out of state,” she said. “I think the nostalgia for a particular meal triggered the nostalgia I have for the places I paint.”

Moore is a landscape painter who focuses on the western United States.

She creates acrylic paintings that are vivid yet subtle by dedicating large areas to the sky and adding tiny landmarks at the bottom.

“I like to leave the room, let the sky breathe a little,” she said from her studio in the Cedars neighborhood of Dallas while working on a piece about a motel in Las Vegas.

She has painted Austin restaurants, California palm trees, and the Vegas Strip.

But some of her favorite pieces include whataburger.

“I started seeing the Whataburger sign as that iconic image in my brain when I drove to Texas,” she said. “I think the first Whataburger is somewhere in Arizona. I remember when I saw it I thought, ‘Oh yeah! I’m almost home. ‘”

She said the bright orange “W” and slanted striped exterior “inspired this feeling of Americana and that feeling of being a Texan.”

It’s not a physical museum.

The Instagram account @TheWMOA currently includes 16 artists from all over the country.

“It contains a variety of perspectives and interpretations of the Whataburger fandom,” says the Whataburger website, which heralds the launch of the virtual museum.

“Many of these artists had tagged Whataburger in the past, and we knew we wanted to shed light on their great work.”

Moore is impressed not only with the talent and skill she sees in other Whataburger artists, but also with the way Whataburger enhances them.

“It’s a really unique way of displaying art because they almost crop it on a white wall in a gallery. And they have these labels that they make for each piece. They also mark every artist, ”she said.

Some of the artworks selected for the museum display the Whataburger logo alone.

Others show the buildings, the bags, the cups or the food.

“Whataburger brings all of these artists together in one place on your phone, and that’s exciting,” said Moore. “It’s really accessible and that’s great.”

Whataburger said it will continue to collect submissions from artists who use the @TheWMOA tag on Instagram posts.

In case you’re wondering, Moore’s favorite whataburger meal is a jalapeño cheeseburger (not the junior size, she said) with french fries and spicy ketchup.
