Where to drink in Dallas right now: 5 bars with roomy outdoor patios
Even before the pandemic, terraces were a big deal. Dallas has the weather to aid them most of the year and has built a collection of iconic outdoor spaces from The Rustic in Uptown to the Katy Trail Icehouse to the infamous courtyard at Cane Rosso in White Rock Lake.
Since the pandemic, outdoor spaces have become an even bigger thing. It’s rare these days to find an opening that doesn’t contain some sort of terrace scenario, the bigger the better. In times of the pandemic you need distance. You want your own space.
These five large terraces offer a nice drink and plenty of space to drink:
400 degrees
Technically, this is less of a bar than an Italian restaurant specializing in Neapolitan style pizza and dishes like pappardelle with mushrooms by Australian chef Johnny Di Francesco. But they have a great terrace. It’s located in the 2000 Ross Building on the corner of Harwood Street, where it forms an “L” that snakes around the corner and is just a fun place to sit in the center of town. It’s a kitty corner corner of the Dallas Museum of Art, so there’s plenty to see and enjoy, and it’s kind of a hidden gem, not too crowded, so you have plenty of space. They have a great wine list dominated by Italian wines, including some treasures from the Piedmont region, but also a full bar with fun European cocktails.
Jaxon beer garden
Jaxon is one of the signature restaurants in the AT&T Discovery District, offering a choice of 34 craft beers plus cocktails, plus a great menu of tacos, burgers, queso, salads and sandwiches – try the mushroom french dip instead of grated beef . Jaxon has an expansive terrace area that spreads out into the Discovery District, and that is a coincidence as the Discovery District is currently a hot travel destination that is literally crowded on the weekends. This holds great promise for downtown Dallas, and if your patio search is all for outdoor space, you should be good. If you avoid contact, it is the right time to be in the early evening during the week.
The cabins on the Austin Ranch
Located on the southeast corner of Windhaven Parkway and Plano Parkway, The Shacks was opened to the public as part of the Austin Ranch, a mixed-use project of the Billingsley Co dog park. It’s a little drive, but a nice excursion if you’re still in the mood for the outdoors in Dallas, and not only do they have great beer from Grrrowler’s Tap Room and Beer Garden, it also has one of two OMG Tacos locations.
The sound at Cypress Waters
Cypress Waters is the massive Billingsley family built complex around North Lake on LBJ and Belt Line Roads that includes offices, apartment buildings, retail and all of the Shebang. The Sound is the official relaxation niche: green parkland, paved sidewalks, mini dog park, small stage for live music and a number of restaurants mostly owned by Shannon Wynne (Rodeo Goat, Flying Fish, Flying Saucer), but also with a cool one Location of Ascension Coffee with cocktails and good wines by the glass. It is an interesting excursion, like visiting another planet that is being reshaped thanks to all the construction in front of your eyes.
Thunderbird station
The Thunderbird Station is located in a Deep Ellum building that first housed a gas station in 1922. You can also have your seat and your fancy cocktails: nominated for a Tastemaker Award in 2021, the bar features award-winning bartender Liz Mitchell’s chops with fun, conceptual drinks, as well as Mediterranean snacks like Bologna sandwiches and frito pie. You can also witness the parade of life that sweeps through Deep Ellum.
