Where to drink in Dallas right now: 5 fun & different new bars to try

For this latest edition of CultureMap’s monthly “Where to Drink” feature, the question is where not to drink. It’s summer, Dallas has achieved herd immunity, and the stifling heat is in the Pacific Northwest. There’s nowhere in Dallas right now that you can’t drink.

Instead of using our usual filter of the best new happy hours, this issue pulls together five locations with unique draws.

Here you can drink in July:

Atlas

The Bishop Arts Lounge, a sister of the Cajun-Asian restaurant Krio (also in Bishop Arts), opened about a month ago. This is a one-themed place: showcasing the world in food, drink and music. Travel your way through the drinks menu via the Pisco Sour (Peru), the Pimm’s Cup (London) and the Singapore Sling (Singapore). They also serve international snacks, including a trio of cheesecakes with worldly themes: Turkish baklava, English banoffee, and Swiss chocolate.

Dream cafe

The beloved Uptown Restaurant has just moved to a new location overlooking McKinney Avenue, which seems to make breakfast and lunch even fresher and more wholesome. In addition to the expected Bloody Mary and mimosa (with freshly squeezed OJ, because that’s the Dream Cafe), there are a few frozen drinks that really require an excursion: Ema’s Frose, thick and cold with a strawberry garnish, and the Frozen Frenchy with brandy, Dream -Coffee and whipped cream, garnished with whipped cream and a cherry.

Elm & Gut

The restaurant at the Kimpton Pittman Hotel in Deep Ellum is certainly best known for its celebrated chef Graham Dodds, but it also has an elegant bar that runs the length of the restaurant and just feels great. The cocktail and wine list is limited, but everything is A +: 10 great cocktails, some named after local institutions like the Gypsy Tea Room with rum and green tea. They have the best local beers on tap and a dazzling selection of wines by the glass, carefully selected and in very generous portions.

Mermaid Raw Bar & Champagne Room

A new bar opens at Bishop Arts on July 12th with lots of personality, including a South Beach meets Boca vibe, just in time for the summer nights. The decor forms the stage with antique chandeliers, a scalloped aquamarine bar, vintage shell accessories and a sculptural mermaid and dolphin table. There will be a raw food bar with oysters and the like; plus ocean-inspired cocktail pairs served from three swirling, built-in sculptural glass dispensers. The wines include trendy orange, bubbles and rosé. Put on your Muu Muu and Puka shell necklace and look for the turquoise neon sign.

Urban Seafood Company

The new seafood restaurant in downtown Plano at 1104 14th Street is a sibling of Urban Crust and Urban Rio, all of which are easily accessible via DART’s Red Line. The inspiration here comes from New England destinations like Nantucket and Boston, and that means lobster rolls and an oyster bar when you’re in the mood for a bite. But don’t sleep on their bar program, which hits all the trends: from frozen cocktails to non-alcoholic “mocktails” to wine and sparkling wines on tap.
