Who will replace Eddie Bernice Johnson in Congress? Here’s a look at potential candidates
The race for the replacement of the MP Eddie Bernice Johnson in the safe seat of the Democrats is considered wide open. The new congressional map still anchors Johnson’s seat in southern Dallas County, but also includes southwest Tarrant County.
Johnson said on Saturday when she announced her resignation that she would be looking for a qualified candidate to advocate for her replacement. Here’s a look at what the Democratic primary race for District 30 might look like. Submission ends on December 13th.
Candidates already running in District 30 include:
– Small business owner Shenita Cleveland, who ran for 2020 and received 13% of the vote
–Zachariah Manning from Dallas
– Progressive Democrat Jessica Mason
–Dalla’s attorney, Abel Mulugheta.
Jane Hamilton, who led President Joe Biden’s presidential campaign in Texas, set up an exploratory committee and is expected to fight for the District 30 seat with Johnson’s resignation.
Other potential candidates include State Representatives Jasmine Crockett and Toni Rose, both from Dallas, and Carl Sherman from DeSoto. Former Dallas District Judge Elizabeth Frizell has also expressed an interest in the seat, as has former Dallas City Council member Vonciel Jones Hill.
Former State MP Barbara Mallory Caraway challenged Johnson along with Hasani Burton and Cleveland in the 2020 Democratic primary. Johnson received over 70% of the vote. Cleveland finished second with 13%. Caraway, a former Dallas City Council member, has made five attempts to depose Johnson.
Johnson attacked her former opponents on Saturday as she spoke about who she would support.
“Anyone who has already been rejected by this district will not get my approval,” she said.
State Sen. Royce West, State Rep. Yvonne Davis, and Dallas County Commissioner John Wiley Price have long been considered potential successors. But Johnson’s 30-year tenure could give these long-time elected Dallas County officials a break. They are much older than likely candidates who have recently surfaced.
