Will ‘America’s Team’ Dallas Cowboys Feel at Home at Chargers?

FRISCO – One of the reasons the Dallas Cowboys “travel well” – meaning America’s Team fans show up in stadiums – is that in many cases, Cowboys fans don’t have to travel at all.

“America’s team, we have fans around the world, especially in LA,” remarked linebacker Jaylon Smith. “So we’re looking forward to having our fans out there and doing everything we can to get a win.”

Sunday’s matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers in the brand new SoFi stadium gives real Chargers fans the chance to defy the claims.

The fact is, however, that the Chargers – formerly from San Diego, of course – do not yet have the gigantic footprint in Southern California that the cowboys have.

That’s exactly how Cowboys owner Jerry Jones planned it.

Jones was instrumental in the NFL’s return to LA and also a key player in the new stadium. The Cowboys’ ties to Southern California come in part from the Dallas-based crew that traveled to the area for training camp (once Thousand Oaks, now Oxnard).

It is also true that Jones, so closely identified with Texas and Arkansas, was actually born in Los Angeles.

SoFi Stadium in LA officially opened last year, but COVID prevented Chargers fans from attending until NFL Week 2 on Sunday.

But also flood safely through the turnstiles? Fans of the “California Cowboys”.

Jaylon Smith said he expected an “electric” atmosphere for the 3:25 pm CT game. At 0-1, the cowboys could use the kind of electricity that makes them feel at home.
