Winter Storm, Supply Chain Problems Impact Christmas Tree Business – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth
Weatherford 4D Farm celebrates the holidays all year round – they grow Christmas trees.
“Love Christmas,” said owner Ron Dearman. “That’s a beautiful tree right there.”
Not all of the trees on his farm look this good. The winter storm in February killed 400 of the 640 cypress seedlings that were planted just before the frost.
“You are dead,” said Dearman. “Two weeks just got too cold, too long too quickly.”
That would have been Christmas trees in five years.
“I’ll have to replace them,” said Dearman. “If I don’t get any faster growing trees or something like that, we’re going to cut 400 trees in five years.”
Dearman usually orders trees from other states to keep up with demand and provide variety. The weather and supply chain issues are causing the perfect storm this year.
“When I ordered them, they quickly told me I wouldn’t get 250 of them,” Dearman said.
Despite everything, Dearman couldn’t suppress a smile when he thought of the coming season.
