Construction of the year-round bathrooms at Sportsman Lodge, a welcome addition to Sportsman Park, the Dallas County Conservation Board’s oldest county park, is progressing.

The board commissioned MA Architecture to design the extension in March 2020 and, at a special meeting in May 2021, unanimously approved a construction offer from Modlin Construction of Perry amounting to US $ 98,500.

The 18 x 23 foot extension will include a kitchen area with a refrigerator, sink and storage room, a family toilet, and men’s and women’s toilets. The expansion will make the 30 x 60 foot Sportsman Lodge, built in 2012, more attractive to winter users. The lodge can accommodate groups of up to 120 people.

Sportsman Park became the Dallas County Conservation Board’s first park in January 1965, two years after the Conservation Board was established. The 40-acre park was bought by Perry Sportsman’s Club for $ 6,000.

Located at 13821 130th St. in rural Dawson, Sportsman Park is covered in oak and hickory and borders the North Raccoon River. Camping, picnicking, and hiking the nature trails are all possible, with easy access to the nearby Raccoon River Valley Trail and Dawson Boat Ramp.

The 1965 purchase price included a custodian, three shelters, tool shed, clubhouse, shooting range, trap shooting range and equipment, horseshoe pitches, fire pits and picnic tables.

In the possession of the district, the caretaker’s house was rebuilt after a fire, but was finally closed in 2015. The trapping and shooting range were closed and a shelter was lost due to a ground collapse.

The district’s facilities included the Sportsman Lodge, a shelter, a shower house, two camping cabins, a handicapped-accessible playground and a modernized campsite.
