Zoo Continues to Investigate What Killed 2 Giraffes Last Month – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth
Dallas Zoo officials say while they were investigating the deaths of two giraffes last month they ruled out zoonosis and side effects from the COVID-19 vaccine.
Jessie, 14, and Auggie, 19, both died of liver problems in October, according to the Zoo.
The zoo said it has not yet received the COVID-19 vaccine so its side effects may not have affected the animals.
UPDATE: While we are still waiting for pathology reports and laboratory tests on food and vegetation to determine the potential causes or connection between Jesse and Auggie’s death, we were able to rule out a few things at this point. Read more: https://t.co/QKK2991XcT pic.twitter.com/eIcalrQvc0

The zoo tested the food and vegetation in the giraffe’s habitat and cut back the grazing land. Animals are being allowed back into the habitat, and the Dallas Zoo said it had no reason to believe the danger was coming from inside the enclosure.
Encephalomyocarditis was also ruled out as a possible cause of death.
The Dallas Zoo monitors other hoof populations, including giraffes, to make sure they’re not showing any strange symptoms by having regular blood draws and checking their liver enzymes. Zoo officials will continue the investigation and keep the public informed.
