Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins reported on Friday 915 new COVID-19 cases and four deaths on Friday. “It appears that only 3.5% of people vaccinated have developed breakthrough cases that require hospitalization,” he tweeted.

UT Southwestern researchers have identified five cases of the lambda variant in Dallas. While research is still ongoing, some studies have found it to be both more contagious and more resistant to vaccines than the original variant, although the vaccine still prevents most serious diseases. The fourth surge continues across North Texas, with 2,653 COVID-19 patients hospitalized in North Texas on Friday. This corresponds to more than 18 percent of the available bed capacity and almost 42 percent of the adult intensive care patients.

At Collin College, the school’s nursing dean has died of COVID-19. She is the second member of the school’s nursing faculty to die from the disease. Find out more with KERA.
