Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia said:
Police and local residents often say they don’t know if they are hearing or shooting fireworks.
“It’s very random and so many people are doing it,” said Paul Bacchus, an Oak Cliff resident.
Bacchus says he is afraid of being hit by bullets every four days over the weekend in July.
“Knowing the ball has to fall, which is a scary part,” said Bacchus.
Councilor Carolyn King Arnold says her district, including the patrol services in south-central and south-west, received the most calls in the city on the 4th.
“There are reports that older people just lie on the floor because they don’t know where the bullets and firecrackers are going,” said Arnold.
Prime Minister Garcia says his officers are already focused on fighting violent crime and street anger. Now they will pay overtime and hire a crime team to handle any extra calls.
“It puts my officers and our community at risk,” said Chief Garcia.
In downtown Dallas, PDs and companies are working to create a safe area for visitors and tourists. Companies bring in additional security and resources to help the homeless.
“Our priority is to make downtown Dallas clean, safe, active, and fun,” said Courtney Garrett of downtown Dallas.
Garcia encourages people to call 911. He says the Dallas Police Department has additional staff this weekend to answer calls, but he patiently says that it can take a long time to answer unless it is a high-priority call.
