Letters to the Editor — Three cheers for Dallas Police Chief, SMU football coverage, 2 Op-Ed writers

1 Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia – Subject: Operation Nets Guns, 47 Arrests – Multiple Agencies Involved in 90 Days of Law Enforcement in Violent Area, Sept 17 Metro & Business Story.

Kudos to Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia for taking the initiative to reduce the proliferation of firearms in the Pleasant Grove area through Operation Pegasus. While it is only a beginning, it is at least a beginning to restore a semblance of law and order by trying to limit the number of shootings in Dallas.

The rest of North Texas is not exempt from this current deadly gun violence pandemic, which will exceed the number of people killed by gun violence in 2020. With access to firearms nearly unchecked in Texas, proactive measures must be taken by law enforcement to minimize the wanton gun violence that plagues Texas and the rest of the country.

2 SMU Football Coverage – Southern Methodist University is a Division 1 football school in Dallas and should be covered on the front page, not through the University of Texas (Austin American-Statesman can put this school on the front page) and not the Texas Christian University (Fort Worth Star-Telegram can handle TCU coverage).

I’ve noticed better coverage of SMU this season and wanted to say hello to those who make this coverage visible. The SMU is working to be “Dallas’ Team” and has the support of the entire community and it is nice to see the support from our hometown newspaper coming out of the hometown. I hope these front page features will become the norm rather than the exception. #PonyUpDallas

3 Two Op-ed Authors – Re: “Do masks protect children from COVID-19?” By Vinay Prasad and “What can near-death experiences tell us about the mystery of the afterlife?” By Lee Strobel, September 5, statement.

It doesn’t happen often, but from time to time the Dallas Morning News gives me double reasons to keep your paper. The first was the Sept. 5 Op-Ed of Prasad, which dealt with the masking debate. It makes it clearer where we are in this mess and how far we have to go, better than any attempt I’ve read so far. A must for both sides of the debate.

The second piece by Strobel dealt with near-death experiences. The merging of science and religion by looking at the experiences of these people has given me a new view of life that maybe makes everything meaningful.
