Mavericks guard Tyrell Terry leaves team temporarily, returns home for family matter

For the second time in as many seasons as a Maverick, Guard Tyrell Terry has retired from basketball – at least temporarily.

Last season, Terry, number 31 in the 2020 draft overall selection, was on leave from March 17 to May 12 for a personal matter.

It’s unclear whether this year’s departure, less than a week at training camp, is related to his absence last season.

“Today I announced to the team that Tyrell Terry has returned home to run a family business,” said trainer Jason Kidd after training Saturday at the BioSteel training facility. “He’ll be a little off the team.”

Terry, who grew up in Minneapolis, only played 11 NBA games last season.

He played most of his playing time in the Disney World bubble of the G-League, where he averaged 14.7 points and 5.1 rebounds in 13 games.

Then came his leave of absence. In July, he thanked Mavericks fans for their support, explaining his absence: “I had to personally take care of something that I had to take care of, so that I can come back and be the best version of myself.”

Last week, when it announced two Tyrell Terry Challenge and Opportunity Scholarships (one for college students in Texas, the other for college students in Minnesota), a press release announced that Terry was inspired by the struggles he faced during COVID-19 Pandemic, initially as a Stanford player whose last season was canceled.

“Like many others, Tyrell has struggled in these unprecedented times,” the press release said. “Instead of letting obstacles hold him back, he used the time as an opportunity – a moment to grow, reprogram, and establish what matters most in his life. He started prioritizing his mental health in ways he had never had before. “

The Mavericks have 16 players with guaranteed contracts and two with two-way contracts. The squad of the training camp with 20 players must be reduced to 15 full contracts and two double contracts before the start of the season.
