Need a costume? A century-old Dallas costume shop could help
The Halloween & Costume Association, representing more than 30 costume companies with cumulative sales of over $ 3 billion, says vendors are facing a shortage.
DALLAS – Lately, with the nationwide supply chain crisis, so many products have had the word “shortage” added that don’t seem to be getting better.
As Halloween approaches, costumes are the newest offering.
The Halloween & Costume Association, representing more than 30 costume companies with cumulative sales of over $ 3 billion, says vendors are facing a shortage.
The chairman of the association has told numerous sales outlets that the scarcity is not just about getting a product from A to B.
Gregor Lawson also said scarcity issues could be due to vendors underestimating demand earlier in the year.
The CDC also essentially said trick or treating is fine with a few safety caveats in the shadow of COVID.
For Michael Robinson, all of this news simply means a busy October.
Robinson owns the Dallas Costume Shoppe in Deep Ellum. It’s been in town since the early 1900s. Robinson bought it in 1997 and currently provides year-round costumes for many theater groups in the North Texas area.
It’s been a tough year for any company, but Robinson in particular, has taken a serious blow from COVID-19 with so many plays and productions being canceled because of the virus.
Now that those shows are back and the CDC has given the green light to trick or treating, Robinson is especially busy this October.
“We had a great response,” said Robinson. “I love Halloween. I love customers who come here and try things out. You don’t want to go to a party and look like 20 other people. You want a unique look. “
Unique makes it easy when you want a Robinson costume. The shop has costumes and clothing from different decades and can put together the look you want.
According to Robinson, many of their businesses are only by appointment.
“It’s a one-on-one with them and we’re putting together a collection of clothes for them to try on,” said Robinson. “We have generations of customers who come to us. People come in and are overwhelmed. They see things that they want to try that they may not have thought of before coming here. ”
When it comes to the costume shortage, Robinson helps people where he can.
“I’ve got calls from people who have ordered something and their party is this weekend or next and it’s not here. It’s not coming,” Robinson said. “The supplies are an issue this year.”
The good news about Robinson’s store is that it is only rented. So he has a lot of inventory and is not dependent on shipments every year.
“I know some of the other costume stores that rely on it, so we can help people out if they need a look,” said Robinson.
If you’re trying on a new look or want to shop for a costume at the last minute, the Dallas Costume Shoppe is located on 3905 Main Street. However, it is easier if you send an email in advance.
