With nearly 40 years of banking and regulatory experience, Schmid began his career in 1981 with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) and remained there until 1989. In 1990 he completed the SWGSB summer residency program at SMU Cox.

After completing the SWGSB program, Schmid became President and CEO of two closely related banks in the Midwest. In 2007 he led the founding of Mutual of Omaha Bank, wholly owned by Mutual of Omaha, where he served as chairman and chief executive officer. He built the organization into a national franchise with nearly $ 10 billion in assets.
Schmid has been a board member of the Cox School of Business for many years. He has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Nebraska. His involvement in the SWGSB Foundation has long been established, including as the former chairman of the SWGSB Foundation’s Board of Trustees. In 2006 he received the Distinguished Service Award from the SWGSB Alumni Association. Only seven other graduates in the 64-year history of the SWGSB have received this prestigious award. He was also a faculty member of the SWGSB and dean for bankers at the SWGSB. He currently serves on the boards of Operation HOPE in Atlanta, Georgia and Avenue Scholars in Omaha, Nebraska.
