These North Texas cities ranked among worst in the country for staycation, report says
If you’re longing to stay, leave North Texas. At least that’s what a WalletHub study suggests.
Staycation, a combination of “stay” and “vacation”, describes exactly that: staying at home to rest and relax instead of traveling.
In the study by the personal finance website in 180 cities, the communities in north Texas did not score very high.
Forty-six indicators were used to rank more than 180 cities in WalletHubs 2021 as “Best & Worst Cities for Staycations”.
Cities were rated using these metrics, which included the number of parks and trails per capita, walkability, restaurant meals, basketball hoops per capita, and local vaccination rates.
Here’s a look at how the northern part of the Lone Star State developed:
Dallas made it to the top half of the cities surveyed, but not by much – it ranked 72nd out of 180 cities.
Plano didn’t do much better, finishing in 75th place. Other suburbs also did poorly: Grand Prairie came in at 162, followed by Arlington and Irving at 164 and 166 respectively.
Fort Worth did better than most of the northern Texas suburbs, but far worse than Dallas. It ranks 132nd out of 180 cities.
But what has tarnished Cowtown’s ranking? Well, to start with, there aren’t many pools per capita. It took 91st place in this category.
Irving was one of the cities surveyed with the fewest tennis courts per inhabitant.
One of the metrics holding back Grand Prairie was a low number of spas per capita compared to other cities in the study.
Garland has been rated the worst town in Texas to stay in – despite its developing downtown area, 2,880 acres of parkland, a vibrant community theater, and water park, to name a few attractions.
Perhaps the study’s authors still associate it with the film Zombieland.
These rankings could be a disappointment for North Texans, who scored better in the Wallethub study on how to stay in 2020.
Last year, Plano was named the nation’s best city to stay by the company, with nearby Grand Prairie landing a respectable No. 8.
