They say good things come in threes. So here are three new dining options that opened in Dallas-Fort Worth in August or September 2021.

New Garland Restaurant Crab City serves seafood fusion dishes that honor the owners’ Vietnamese upbringing and show their love for Cajun food.

The seafood joint was born from an unusual duo – Myke Nguyen, who owns several dental companies, and Minh Nguyen, who have a background in construction. Despite their last name, the Nguyen men are not related, but they say they are “sworn brothers” who have come together for a “family business”. The rest of their staff consists of real families, like restaurant coordinator QueAnh Nguyen, who is married to Myke Nguyen, and Cuc Tran, 75, who is the mother of Chef Minh Nguyen.

“Food is her passion,” says QueAnh Nguyen. “We’ll try, with the help of the family.” (She came out of retirement to do this: before the pandemic, she dived at resorts around the world. “So here I am, at home in the US, with plenty of time,” she says.)

The menu includes straightforward fish dishes such as boiled lobster and fried catfish. It also offers Thai, Chinese, and Vietnamese dishes with an emphasis on seafood – like the chef’s lobster with XO sauce, a classic Hong Kong sauce.

Crab City is located at 618 N Jupiter Road, Garland. It opened on September 1, 2021.

The Basic Beach, a watermelon, basil and vodka cocktail, shows the playfulness in the Suburban Yacht Club in Plano. The restaurant opens on September 7th, 2021.

Rokwood

Rokwood is a new nightclub in downtown Dallas that opened on September 2, 2021. It offers DJs, a bottle service and VIP areas. Rokwood is a new nightclub in downtown Dallas that opened on September 2, 2021. It offers DJs, a bottle service and VIP areas.

The Rokwood nightclub in downtown Dallas is modeled after a club and taqueria in Miami’s South Beach. Managing partner Matt Jones describes Rokwood as a part whisper bar, part night club. An attached restaurant, Taco City, will be opening soon, says a spokeswoman.

The club has chandeliers and gilded mirrors to look like “an Instagramer’s dream,” a company statement said. A private area bathed in blue even has a claw-foot bathtub for photos.

Rokwood will have DJs and the option for a bottle service every night it’s open Thursday through Sunday. The two-story structure could eventually get a third floor – a rooftop terrace that is expected to overlook the lighted Omni Hotel in downtown Dallas.

Jones hopes this is the kind of place where a group of people can have multiple experiences: “You’re bored with one place and you and your friends go and see a whole different point of view,” he says.

Rokwood is located at 600 Jackson St., Dallas. It opened on September 2, 2021.

The owners of Bryan Street Tavern in Old East Dallas have opened Sylvan Avenue Tavern in West Dallas. It’s a bar and pizzeria with much of the businesslike feel of the original.

The Sylvan Avenue Tavern has pool tables, TVs, pinball machines, and a rooftop terrace. The bar replaces a largely vacant space that was once a yoga studio in the Sylvan Thirty development cornered by the Belmont Hotel.

Despite the simple room, the menu is serious. Choices range from bar food like roasted ravioli and loaded tots to more eclectic options like edamame, served with a spicy garlic soy sauce. The menu also includes a dozen pizzas; three pasta; 11 Chicken Wing Sauce Options; six burgers; and eight sandwiches, including a grilled cheese, Philly cheesesteak, and salad wraps. Dessert too.

Sounds like you should come hungry and thirsty.

The Sylvan Avenue Tavern is located at 1888 Sylvan Ave., Dallas (in Sylvan Thirty). It opened on August 13, 2021.
