Dallas chef Tiffany Derry to judge new home cooking competition show

Dallas-based chef Tiffany Derry will be a fixture on a new cooking contest television show dedicated to finding the best family recipes across the country. The Great American Recipe on PBS gives home cooks the chance to judge their signature dishes with Derry’s chefs and restaurateurs Graham Elliot and Leah Cohen.

For Derry, who owns Roots Chicken Shak and recently opened Roots Southern Table in Farmers Branch as a tribute to her own family’s kitchen, the show couldn’t be better.

“I think it’s great that it’s about where you’re from and putting that in the spotlight. I am happy to see different types of food represented, ”says Derry. “What makes American food great is that it’s a melting pot of diversity, and with this show we’re definitely highlighting that.”

This is not Derry’s first attempt at show business. The chef previously participated on Top Chef, was a juror on Top Chef Jr., and has appeared on other shows such as Cutthroat Kitchen and Hungry Investors. She says she takes every opportunity to be an envoy for Texan cuisine and preach its diversity.

“At every show I do, I try to lay Texas on its back and show that we’re not just a steak and potato place,” she says.

She’ll be looking for home cooks who bring in their own family traditions and regional classics, as she did at Roots Southern Table, where the hummus is made from black-eyed peas and her mother’s gumbo is on the menu.

The Great American Recipe is slated to air in the summer of 2022 and be available on PBS.
