Portland Considering Ban On Texas Trade Over Abortion Law – CBS Dallas / Fort Worth
PORTLAND, Oregon (CBSDFW.COM/AP) – Portland, Oregon City Council will vote on Wednesday on an emergency resolution banning the purchase of goods and services from Texas in response to a new law there that bans most abortions.
The resolution, if passed, would also prohibit city workers from traveling to the state.

Mayor Ted Wheeler’s office said in a press release Friday, Sept. 3, that the resolution would remain in force until Texas either withdraws the abortion law or is overturned in court.
“The Portland City Council agrees that everyone should have the right to choose if and when to get pregnant, and that the choices they make are complex, difficult and unique to their circumstances.” According to the press release.
New Texas law prohibits abortions once medical professionals can detect cardiac activity, usually about six weeks – before some people know they are pregnant.

Courts have prevented other states from imposing similar restrictions, but Texan law differs significantly in that it leaves private individuals to enforce through lawsuits instead of law enforcement.
The Supreme Court’s decision last week not to interfere with Texan law sparked indignation from liberals and cheers from many conservatives.
“We urge other leaders and elected bodies across the country to join us in condemning the actions of the Texas state government,” the Portland Mayor’s office said.
