Winstead hires IP and business litigation trio from Thompson & Knight in Dallas
US national law firm Winstead has hired a team of Thompson & Knight intellectual property attorneys to strengthen its Dallas-based intellectual property coverage.
The trio of attorneys includes Phillip Philbin, Jamie McDole, and Michael Karson, with all three joining as shareholders. The team brings experience in a wide range of IP and commercial disputes, including areas such as higher education, life sciences, and technology.
David Dawson, Chairman and CEO of Winstead, said, “Jamie, Mike and Phillip are outstanding and highly respected IP litigators. Your addition will dramatically expand our experience and leadership in segments of IP litigation that we have not been able to serve. “
Philbin joins Winstead after just over a year as a partner at Thompson & Knight, having previously spent nearly three decades at Haynes and Boone, where he served as a board member and head of the IP Litigation and Business Litigation sections. McDole, on the other hand, followed Philbin to Thompson after spending nearly eight years at Haynes and Boone, having previously spent nearly 13 years at Kirkland & Ellis. Karson was a former colleague of McDole in Kirkland and moved to Haynes and Boone in McDole a little over a year. He became a partner in 2019 before also joining Thompson.
James Ruiz, chairman of Winstead’s Litigation and Dispute Settlement Group, said, “Our litigation attorneys are known for looking around the corner, anticipating problems and developing innovative solutions to meet our clients’ most complex legal challenges. Phillip, Jamie and Mike share the same passion for creativity and service. “
Philbins practice focuses on complex technical and scientific cases and advises on topics such as virtual reality, gaming, mobile communications and the chemical composition of medical devices for open heart surgery. McDole is a seasoned first litigation attorney and regularly advises clients on strategies for enforcing patent portfolios, while Karson’s practice focuses on all areas of intellectual property, including patent, trademark, copyright and trade secret misappropriation cases.
The trio are the youngest attorneys to leave Thompson & Knight this year in Texas after a team of four Austin-based energy lawyers left O’Melveny & Myers in June and a duo of Houston corporate lawyers to Winston & Strawn in June are can.
