47-Yard Field Goal Lifts Cardinals Over Cowboys – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth
Matt Prater scored two field goals in the final two minutes, including a 47-yard game winner with no time left, to lift the Arizona Cardinals 19-16 in a preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys on Friday night.
Prater kicked a 48-yard field 1:51 in the fourth quarter to push the Cardinals into a 16-all tie. The subsequent drive of the cowboys quickly fizzled out and gave the Cardinals enough time to drive downfield and set up the game-winning kick of the Prater.
There is no overtime in the NFL preseason games.
Ben DiNucci threw a 1-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Smith in the middle of the fourth quarter to give the Cowboys a 16-13 lead. DiNucci played three games for the Cowboys last season, starting one.
It was the first preseason game for the Cardinals and the second for the Cowboys, who lost 16-3 in the Hall of Fame game against the Steelers last week.
Most of the stars of both teams – including Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray and Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott – didn’t play on Friday. Prescott was plagued by a right shoulder sprain that limited his time in the field at camp.
Eno Benjamin ran for a 6-yard touchdown to give the Cardinals a 10-3 at the end of the second quarter. Quarterback Chris Streveler ran 23 yards in the previous game and cut through the middle of the Cowboys defense to set up Benjamin’s scoring run.
Benjamin was a seventh round election from the state of Arizona in 2020, vying for a squad spot.
Prater scored a 33-yard field goal late in the first quarter to put the Cardinals 3-0 ahead. The two-time pro bowler has been in the league for 15 years and spent the last seven years with the Detroit Lions before signing with the Cardinals in the off-season.
He also added a 28-yard field goal in the third quarter.
Dallas kicker Hunter Niswander scored three field goals from 38, 36 and 36 yards.
Cardinal’s backup quarterback Colt McCoy started the game, completing 6 of 7 passes for 69 yards.
Cardinal rookie Zaven Collins made two tackles. The linebacker was the Cardinals’ first choice in 16th place overall. Arizona is hoping he can team up with sophomore linebacker Isaiah Simmons this season to anchor the center of defense.
Cowboys rookie linebacker Micah Parsons made four tackles. He was number 12 in the overall standings.
