Dallas as a Destination | On Location

In the Houston sports fandom, it is fashionable to hate Dallas. But the area itself has its good points. There are good restaurants, great golf courses and more lakes than you think.

In fact, my brother-in-law lives in Grapevine, which has a great lake with a sailboat racetrack. This may not appeal to you, but I grew up with it and this is my article, so there!

Dallas is a great place for Texans because of its proximity and it seems everyone has a relative to stay with. If not, there are at least two huge hotels with water parks. To some of you it may feel like a punishment for an offense to go to one of these places, but if you have kids and want to keep them off their screens, these places are money.

The Cowboys have a lot of history and it’s on display at their Frisco facility. This place is impressive and accessible to fans with retail stores, a restaurant and a gym. Texans trained there during Hurricane Harvey and the cowboy staff couldn’t have been nicer.

Despite having all of these traditions, Texans have actually fared better than Dallas since Houston got NFL football in 2002. Yes, the Cowboys have a 2-3 lead in regular season games, but the Texans have more division titles and more playoff wins than Dallas. It’s been 26 years since the Cowboys left the division round behind.

Editor’s note – Vandermeer, this is supposed to be a travel piece. Stop talking about the cowboys nowhere near the success they had in the early 90s! Oh wait now I do it! As you were…

The Cowboys Stadium may not be the greatest home advantage in the world, but it is fun to watch a game play. It may seem like a travel destination where 70,000 people pay to watch a giant TV, but there’s more to it than that. They have a good ambient show with all of the music and dance and video components.

It may not be like the Texans GameDay experience, which won Best-in-The-NFL game presentation more than any other team (in fact, Houston is a recognized DYNASTY in that department), but they are pretty good.

There were only two Texans regular season games in Dallas, one at the old Texas Stadium in 2006 and the other in 2014. Houston will be back at Arlington in 2022, the Texans and Bucs.
