Denton City Council Extends Mask Mandate Through October – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth

A mask mandate introduced by Denton City Council in August will be extended until next month.

The ordinance, which was due to expire on September 30th and will now be extended to October 31st, applies to public schools (Pre-K up to 12th grade), daycare centers, companies and municipal buildings.

The wording of the mandate reflects what Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins did last month. In August, Governor Greg Abbott (R) and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) stated they intended to fight the mandate in Dallas, but court documents admitted they could not enforce the order, according to the Texas Tribune.

Here is a quick list of things to know about the Denton City Mask Mandate:

  • All pre-K to 12 public schools and daycare centers “must require at least one universal interior masking for teachers, staff, students and visitors”, regardless of vaccination status. Children under two years of age are excluded.
  • “All commercial establishments in Denton City that offer goods or services directly to the public must develop and implement health and safety policies.” This also means that all employees and visitors require universal indoor masking. “Failure to draft and implement the Health and Safety Policy required by this regulation within three calendar days of the Effective Date may result in a fine of no more than $ 1,000 for any violation.”
  • All employees, contractors and visitors in the City of Denton buildings, regardless of vaccination status, must wear a face mask
  • The general public is “strongly encouraged” to wear masks in public indoor spaces, but there are no civil or criminal penalties against those who fail to do so.
