NBA News: Orlando Magic Hire Mavericks’ Jamahl Mosley as Head Coach

For the first time since 2018, Orlando Magic is hiring a new head coach. After hiring Steve Clifford ahead of the 2018 season, the now former head coach and Magic split after the 2020-2021 season when the organization signaled a rebuilding. Clifford left Magic with a 96-131 record, winning only two out of ten playoff games during his three seasons.

After a little over a month of searching for Clifford’s replacement, the Magic found their husband. Late last week it was reported that Orlando is heavily considering hiring the Dallas Mavericks’ assistant coach Jamahl Mosley.

On Sunday, The Athletic’s Shams Charania reported that it was a closed deal. As the longtime Mavericks assistant travels to Orlando on Sunday, the budding head coach will be officially named head coach this week.

Mosley, a former Colorado University player, has never spent time playing in the NBA. Instead, he made a career abroad and played for several clubs from 2001 to 2005. After a short-lived playing career, Mosley made his way to coaching.

It was then that Mosley started in the NBA. During the 2005-2006 season, Mosley landed his first NBA coaching job with the Denver Nuggets. After serving as a player development coach for two years, Mosley was promoted to assistant coach for the Nuggets, a title he held through 2010.

After staying in Denver, Mosley went on to train with the Cleveland Cavaliers from 2010 to 2014 before eventually ending up with the Dallas Mavericks. Now is the time for Mosley to lead his own coaching staff.

Though the longtime assistant to the Mavs was given the opportunity to interview for the vacant head coach position of the Mavericks earlier in the off-season, Dallas hired Jason Kidd instead. Now Mosley will join the Eastern Conference to coach the rebuilding of Magic. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Mosley’s deal is expected to be for a four-year contract.
