In a nutshell
The Murray State football team achieved tremendous performances on both sides of the ball on Saturday as the Racers led southeast Missouri 28-10 in the 2021 home final at Roy Stewart Stadium in Murray.
Brief information
· Murray State held Southeast Missouri 0-for-13 for the third conversion in the game. It was the first time since Valparaiso in 2013 that the Racers didn’t miss out on a single third down conversion. The Redhawks finished the day with an average 3rd down distance of 10.6 yards.
With 6,313 spectators on Saturday, the third largest home final in known history, the Racers ended the 2021 season with an average of 7,843 fans per game. This season’s average is the highest for a Murray State football team since 1998.
Murray State finished the two rushers over 100 yards for the first time since 2018. DJ Williams finished with 121 rushing yards while Damonta Witherspoon took 113. Williams had two dazzling touchdowns that day while Witherspoon had one, but both also fit for a touchdown.
The pass from DJ Williams to Dequan Dallas in the third of 73 yards will go down as the eighth longest in school history. Dallas now has two career catches of 70 yards or more after catching an 83-yard pass from Preston Rice last season. Dallas is now one of only six racers of all time to catch two or more passes from over 70 yards, joining Jesse Blackburn, Janawksi Davis, Jordon Gandy, Matt Hall and Terrance Tillman. Additionally, Dallas and Tillman are the only two racers to have two catches of 70 yards or more with two different quarterbacks.
Recap
Murray State scored two touchdowns in both the first and second quarters and that was all they’d need as they held the 28-10 win. The Racers only allowed one touchdown in the game, while neither team scored in the second half.
Williams was 10 for 17 for 175 yards on Saturday, in addition to 121 rushing yards on 11 carries with two touchdowns, including a long of 58. Witherspoon finished the day 113 yards on 26 carries, one rushing touchdown and one passing touchdown.
Erica Samuta led a racer defense that kept the SEMO offensive at less than 100 yards with eight tackles. Quinaz Turner had the only interception of the Racers, while Marcis Floyd, Brandon Burton and Maurice Green each had a sack. CJ Barnes had a game-high 2.0 tackles-for-loss in the afternoon, while Devontae McKee ended the day with five tackles and two pass breakups.
