White Mom With Black Daughter Accused of Human Trafficking on Southwest Airlines Flight – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth

On October 22nd, Mary MacCarthy booked a last-minute flight from Los Angeles to Denver after her brother had died suddenly the night before.

The Mar Vista single mother later found unfounded that Denver police were investigating a Southwest Airlines report that she was a suspected human trafficker and was traveling with a victim, not her own bi-racial 10-year-old daughter Moira.

She believes it was a racially motivated move by the Southwest Airlines flight attendants.

“I’ve been very forthcoming with information to be honest,” she said. “I gave them our names, why we traveled, what I did for a living.”

Southwest Airlines said in a statement it was reviewing the situation and reaching out to MacCarthy to apologize.

“At this point, you can speak to my lawyers,” MacCarthy said.

She says it’s about more than an excuse.

“I travel with my daughter’s birth certificate because I am ready to answer any questions if necessary,” she said. “The fact that we are mother and daughter, the fact that I am a single parent and travel with my daughter. It is the TSA’s right to ask these questions, and I’m openly unprofessional for that.

“I will do everything I can to speak out against the kind of ignorant behavior and guidelines that result in families being treated this way.”
