Austin airport flies higher in annual traveler satisfaction study

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is now in a different stratosphere when it comes to traveler satisfaction.

According to the North American Airport Satisfaction Study 2021 by the market research giant JD Power, Austin Airport ranks seventh among the major airports. That’s a notch better than last year when ABIA landed at number 8 on the list.

In the 2021 study, Austin Airport scored 819 on a 1,000-point scale, a few steps above the 805 average among the 20 major airports. Last year the airport received a score of 804.

Although COVID-19 has put a kink in normal air travel, passenger traffic in ABIA has risen lately, with Austin Airport reporting a massive 279.6 percent increase in passenger traffic in July 2021 compared to June 2020 when far fewer people were there flying.

Meanwhile, in the Alamo City, San Antonio International Airport, which appeared at a higher level this year – large airports instead of its previous medium-sized categorization – rose from 9/11 among major airports to a score of 813. Last year, the Airport a score of 811.

Here’s how the other major airports in Texas fared:

  • Dallas Love Field, No. 4, with a score of 829. That score makes it the top-rated Texas airport in the study. In 2020, Love Field ranked first among all major airports with a score of 844.

  • William P. Hobby Airport in Houston, No. 17, with a score of 794. In 2020, Hobby was ranked fourth with a score of 823.

With a score of 844, Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport landed first among the major airports this year. At large airports, 10 to 32.9 million passengers are handled annually.

Miami International Airport took first place among the mega-airports with 828 points. This year’s average for the 20 mega-airports was 798. Mega-airports receive at least 33 million passengers annually.

Dallas / Fort Worth International Airport was ranked 7th in the Mega Airports category with a score of 805. Last year, Texas’s busiest airport was ranked sixth with a score of 791.

George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston secured 8th place in this year’s Mega Airport category with a score of 801. That is an increase from 13th place in 2020 when it received a score of 775.

The JD Power study measures traveler satisfaction in six categories:

  • Travel facilities.

  • Accessibility of the airport.

  • Baggage claim.

  • Security control.

  • Check-in and baggage control.

  • Food, Beverage, and Retail.
