Report: Mark Cuban Now Owns a Texas Town

As a billionaire, you can do some interesting things with your money. For some celebrities, investors, and CEOs, this could lead to the purchase of a luxury nine-figure apartment or a yacht so massive that it comes with its own yacht. Mark Cuban, the billionaire owner of the Dallas Mavericks, enabled him to have a considerable amount of money to do what few others have done – buy an entire city.

The Dallas Morning News reports that Cubans have bought the Texas city of Mustang, which is 77 acres and is an hour’s drive south of Dallas. As to why he did this, the reports are less clear – Insider’s report on the purchase suggested he did this as a favor to a friend who had to sell the town.

What does a Cuban get for his money? A small town that has a building that houses the fire department, a strip club that needs repair, and a pond that is home to an alligator. Maybe think of “Southern Gothic Schitt’s Creek”.

What Cubans intend to do with the city remains to be seen. And that’s not just speculation – Cubans themselves don’t seem sure what to do with it. “I don’t know what I’ll do with it,” he told the Dallas Morning News via email.

The idea that celebrities own cities has a strange history, and involves Kim Basinger investing in a Georgia city in the 1990s, a project that didn’t work out as planned. A 2019 article by CNN provided an in-depth look at small-town self-sufficiency and the challenges that come with it. What could Cubans do next? We are all waiting to see it – especially those with close ties to the city of Mustang.
