WNBA: Desperate New York Liberty travel to face league-leading Connecticut Sun | NBA News
The top-seeded Sun will finish strong on Wednesday night in Uncasville, Connecticut as they host the New York Liberty to begin a two-game home stand at the end of the regular season.
Connecticut (24-6) secured number 1 overall in the WNBA playoffs after a 76-67 win in Phoenix on Saturday. The Sun have won the top 12 straight season games in the league and haven’t lost since a 79:57 setback against Seattle in the Commissioner’s Cup on August 12th.
The streak of 12 wins in a row corresponds to the team’s all-time record from 2006. With another win on Wednesday evening, they have the opportunity to write franchise history.

Jasmine Thomas paced the sun with a team high of 17, while DeWanna Bonner scored 16 against her former team. MVP candidate Jonquel Jones contributed 12 points and 16 boards for Connecticut, ending Mercury’s own winning streak of 10 games.

“Securing the # 1 spot is just down to the players who keep preparing and then the tenacity of how hard they play each night,” said Connecticut manager Curt Miller.
The two-time all-star Alyssa Thomas is also classified as likely and could make her season debut for the sun. Alyssa Thomas tore her Achilles tendon while playing abroad in the Czech Republic in January.
New York (11-19) faces an uphill battle for the postseason as it enters the game in 10th place in the league standings. The Liberty are level with Los Angeles, with both trailing one game in eighth in Washington to reach the final playoff spot.

Sabrina Ionescu’s shot in the final seconds was blocked for the Liberty in their 77-76 defeat in Dallas last Saturday. The defeat was New York’s worst seventh in a row, which went into the crucial last two games against the playoff contenders.
“We have worked on it for the last couple of games, stayed together and are still working on it,” said Liberty striker Natasha Howard, who had 16 points and 11 boards against the Wings. “If we bring everything together, then we’ll do what we have to do and get a win.”
After the Liberty game in Connecticut, New York returns home to host the Mystics on Friday in a game that could potentially decide the eighth seed.
New York have lost both games to Connecticut this season, losing 85-64 on June 5th and 71-54 on July 11th.
